Received the following note from Milford in December 2011:
Tom Heinemann wins a major award for 'The Microdebt'
Dear Friends/Colleagues
Award-Winning Danish documentary film maker, Tom Heinemann, has been awarded one of Europe's most prestigious prizes for documentary film-making, the Lorenzo Natali Grand Prize for 2011. This award was given for Heinemann's 2010 documentary film 'The MicroDebt', an analysis of the long-hidden downsides to microcredit and the microcredit industry. In particular, Heinemann exposes as hollow the many uplifting claims made on behalf of microcredit by one of its iconic pioneers, the founder of the Grameen Bank and 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Dr Muhammad Yunus. Rather than 'eradicate poverty in a generation' so that our children would soon have to go to a 'poverty museum' to see what all the fuss was about, as Dr Yunus has long and famously claimed would be the case, Heinemann finds that microcredit in practise all too often traps the hapless poor into even worse poverty, insecurity and inescapable overindebtedness.
With microcredit sectors collapsing in a sea of over-indebtedness and associated rising poverty levels all around the world - notably in Andhra Pradesh state in India and in Bosnia in the Western Balkans - and with many countries rapidly approaching to this negative scenario - Mexico, Peru, many states in India, Azerbaijan, Ghana, Kyrgyzstan and even Bangladesh itself - Heinemann's documentary is a wake-up call that needs to be heard and urgently acted upon by the international development community.
